Minimal requirements
Basic familiarity with non-human primate research and medical imaging.
Proficiency in English.
⚠️ Due to contact with the animals also a negative TB check is necessary (< 6 months old) ⚠️
Who should apply
Anyone wishing to be introduced to non-human primate research and imaging in non-human primates, especially:
· Early-career scientists working with NHP models
· Imaging specialists moving into translational NHP research
· Veterinarians, animal welfare officers, and lab animal scientists
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, trainees will gain a solid understanding of in vivo imaging techniques used at multiple biological scales in non-human primate (NHP) models. They will also be informed about the ethical and regulatory frameworks governing NHP experimentation, along with practical guidelines for enhancing animal welfare.
Course content
This four-day course provides a comprehensive introduction to both animal welfare and multimodal imaging in non-human primates. Over the first two days, participants will explore key principles of animal welfare, including the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement), enrichment, zoonoses, species specific behaviour and optimal study design including the ARRIVE and CONSORT guidelines. Followed by two days focused on imaging covering a range of imaging modalities, such as PET-CT and ultrasound but also microscopy, histology and pathology. Finalized with an afternoon spend on data analysis and the value of the p-value.
Overview
During the first two days of this course, you’ll learn about the latest developments in 3Rs and animal welfare fare for non-human primates. This course will provide essential training on statistics, ethical handling, care and regulatory aspects of the use of non-human primates in research.
The course is followed by two days focused on medical imaging opportunities in non-human primates, both in vivo and ex vivo, covering different imaging methodologies, image analysis, and the biological interpretation of results.
Scholarships
We are pleased to offer free registration and travel funding to selected researchers from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These registration and travel grants for LMIC applicants are generously sponsored by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
Please note that not all courses are open for application submission, check open calls to know which for which courses you can apply for at the moment.
