European Vaccine Initiative
The European Vaccine Initiative (EVI) (previously known as the European Malaria Vaccine Initiative) was originally founded in 1998 by the European Commission and numerous Member States. EVI is based at the UnversitätsKlinikum Heidelberg, Germany.
The main objective for which EVI was established is to contribute to the global efforts to control diseases of poverty. The mission of EVI is:
- To financially and technically support the accelerated development and clinical trials of vaccines for diseases of poverty in Europe and Developing Countries.
- To promote affordability and accessibility of vaccines for diseases of poverty in Europe and Developing Countries.
- To engage European and international resources committed to research on vaccines for diseases of poverty.
The EVI EC Project Management Department currently coordinates five EC-funded projects with a total value of 26 million Euro. Over 35 project beneficiaries are involved in these projects and a Trainee Project Manager, two full time Project Managers, and a Senior Project Manager manage the day-to-day project management activities. In addition, this staff is supported by a Financial Manager and a Quality Assurance Manager.

Tasks in the project
EVI’s main role in TRANSVAC is to handle the daily Coordination and Management of the project. This includes:
- Coordination of project activities
- Ensuring adherence to technical, financial, legal and contractual guidelines
- Reporting project progress to the EC
- Ensuring good communication within the project and with external stakeholders
- Dissemination of the projects achievements
- Managing the project’s Calls for Users
- Managing the project’s external advisory committees
EVI also acts as the contact point between the European Commission and the consortium partners whilst connecting the project with as many external stakeholders as possible The TRANSVAC Management Team is there to help the partners resolve any problems, and to provide them with guidance and advice wherever needed.
